How to Select a Student

We invite you to select one outstanding sophomore to representyourschool at this year’s NCYLS.  We limit participation to one student per school to encourage the students to meet new people, be themselves, and come to the seminar free of judgement.   As a result, students are more likely to speak their minds and throw themselves into the experience.

To select a student:

1. Use the criteria below to select a sophomore.

What Kind of Student Should I Select?

The following guidelines have proven effective for choosing the types of students who gain the most
out of NCYLS:

• Students who have shown concern for their communities through           volunteering  or who have shown an interest in service
• Students who have excelled in academics, sports, the arts or other extra-curricular activities
• Students who show potential, but who may need a ”push” to blossom into leadership
• Students who show potential but have not had the benefit of leadership classes
• Students who have demonstrated critical thinking skills, creative problem solving and strong
decision making skills
• Students who have demonstrated the ability to influence and motivate others as well as strong
organizational ability

Selection Process

Below are some suggested methods for selecting your representative:

• Announce the seminar and selection process to the sophomore class
• Engage an NCYLS alum in the selection process. Their experience at the seminar can be extremely
helpful in selecting the next participant.
• Have students submit an essay on the meaning of leadership and select the best essay
• Form a selection committee comprising the faculty, leadership advisors and NCYLS alumni
• Select one primary student and one alternate student. Selecting an alternate ensures your school
is represented in case the primary cannot attend
• Students must be able to attend the entire weekend, including all of Friday, May 21st.

The NCYLS Recruitment team is standing by, ready to answer any questions you may have about selection, registration or the seminar.

“NCYLS has taught me so much! I can't believe how much I have learned about myself. I learned to let go and trust other people. My opinion is that as many people as possible should come to NCYLS. NCYLS is one of the best things for high school students. I want more than anything to come back and help.”
- Paige Ramstack, San Mateo High School

“The entire experience changed my life and is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have been to numerous conferences from a few hours in duration to twenty three days, conferences with no budget at all to the largest amount possible. I can clearly say there is nothing that even comes close to this program. I think it is so important that it really needs to expand.”
- Bradley Bottoms, Junipero Serra

Thumbs Up

"This seminar to me means that I can help change the community for the best and our generation has the power. I loved this experience.  I wish everyone could at least witness part of something like this."
–Willy Webb, Greenville High School
